Indonesian presidential election, 2009 Presidential elections were held in Indonesia on 8 July 2009. The elections returned a president and vice president for the 2009รข€"2014 period. A run-off election was scheduled to be held on 8 September if needed, but President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono won more than 60% of the vote in the 1st round, which enabled him to secure reelection without a run-off. Yudhoyono was officially declared the victor of the election on 23 July 2009, by the General Election Commission. This was the 2nd election in which Indonesians elected their President and Vice President directly. In 2004, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono defeated incumbent Megawati Sukarnoputri in a run-off election. Polls through early January 2009 saw Yudhoyono leading a large field of potential presidential candidates. Indonesian presidential election, 2014 The next Indonesian presidential election will be held in July 9, 2014. It will be Indonesia's 3rd direct presidential election, and will elect a president for a five-year term. Incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is constitutionally barred from seeking a 3rd term in office. According to the 2009 election law, only parties or coalitions controlling 20% of DPR seats or winning 25% of the popular votes in the 2014 parliamentary elections will be eligible to nominate a candidate. This law is unlikely to be amended before the 2014 elections. Indonesia is working towards e-voting in the hope of implementing the new system in the 2014 general elections. Indonesian presidential election, 2004 The 1st direct presidential election in Indonesia was held in two rounds on 5 July and 20 September 2004. Prior to a 2002 amendment to the Constitution of Indonesia, the President and Vice President were elected by the country's top legislative body, the People's Consultative Assembly. Under the new amendment, a candidate pair is elected into office after receiving more than 50 percent of the vote nationally with at least 20 percent of the vote in more than half of the provinces of Indonesia. If no pair receives the amount of votes required, the election will continue into the 2nd round with the pairs receiving the highest and 2nd highest number of votes.
