National Awakening Party The National Awakening Party is a Conservative and moderate Islamic political party in Indonesia. The party is led by Muhaimin Iskandar. The story of PKB's establishment began on May 11, 1998, when the elders Kyai held a meeting at Pesantren Langitan. This discussion included demands for changes in order to save the Indonesian nation from destruction. As a result, the Kyai made an official statement to Pak Harto requesting that he step down from the presidency. Kyai members Muchid Muzadi of Jember and Gus Yusuf Muhammad were sent to deliver the letter and face Soeharto. When they went to Jakarta to ask for additional time, however, they were unable to schedule a meeting because Soeharto resigned on May 23, 1998, before receiving the letter. On May 30, 1998, Kyai-kyai held a grand Istighosah in East Java. There, all the Kyai gathered in the office of East Java PWNU.
